    The Role of the Story Teller, Richard Tuttle

    "Color is not easy to translate into words. Perhaps color actively resists language or plausible de nition? And vice versa: words can change color. I got this idea from thinking about how color and sound are similar. We can use the same words for both: depth, tone, brightness, etc... ere sound is not ordered in nature, we order it and make music. Color must be the same."



    Richard Tuttle reflects on color during his stay in Ostend in 2017, where his solo exhibition Light And Color was on view at Mu.Zee. It was here that he set out the initial framework for what became The Role Of The Story Teller, a book that invites us to his world of color.



    The book consists of five sections, depicting and illustrating two of his marvellous artist books—Not the Point (2009) and You never see the same color twice (2017)—while connecting them with three exhibitions from 2017, namely his solo-presentation at de Hallen (Haarlem, NL), Books, Multiples, Prints, Writings and New Projects at Galerie Christian Lethert (Cologne,

    DE) and Light and Color at Mu.Zee (Ostend, BE).



    With his documented writings, images of artworks and selections of text, Tuttle departs from concrete notions of color, instead proposing a boundless vision of “real” color. Tuttle’s themes and provocative questions bring together seemingly disparate episodes, providing new ways to consider and experience our own relationship to color.

    Adrift (German version), Ricardo Brey

    The publication reflects the core of Ricardo Brey’s most recent body of works Adrift (2014-ongoing) 



    as well on the core of the overall aspiration of Ricardo Brey for his exhibitions in Museum De Domijnen in Sittard, the Netherlands (10 February – 10 June 2019) and Gerhard-Marcks Haus, Bremen, Germany (1 December 2019 – 1 March 2020). While it is not an artist book in the traditional sense, it is definitively a project by an artist. The aim of the publication is to create a sense of the artistic space that Brey wants to offer, with a polyphony of voices and an immersive sphere in which a quality of behavior is of prime importance. It focusses strongly on his most recent body of works, Adrift

After being confined to a wheelchair for several months due to medical issues, the artist described himself as “drifting around … wandering in my study not … working in my total capacity.” Discovering that this description—“drifting off”—described his new state of mind, he began to create a series of disparate yet interconnected works from, in his words, “fragments that float in my memory, images that have no place in the rigid parameters of my previous work.” Ranging in form from sculptures and installations to photographs and drawings, these works recall earlier projects while breaking new ground.

    Representing the Work, Matt Mullican

    In the mid-1970’s, Matt Mullican developed a unique artistic language based on pictograms, diagrams and cosmological models. In reaction to conceptual art, this return to the image made the American artist one of the represantatives of the Picture Generation. Alongside these symbols placed on various supports (sheets, books, stained glass, etc.), his performances under hypnosis give expression to that person, an emblematic, even caricatural human figure. In 2018, Matt Mullican created representing the work, an installation mosaic of 64 iconographic illustrations that catalogue the principal chapters of his work.



    This catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition ‘Matt Mullican. Representing the Work’ at MAC’s Grand Hornu, 16.02–18.10.2020.

    STUFF provides an overview of ten years public art projects and includes an in-depth interview by prof.dr. Wouter Davidts about what this practice means for Van den Broek. Especially fort his publication, the artist created new sketches on tracing paper that provide insight into his working process and the interaction with his painterly oeuvre.     Third Eye, Luc Dondeyne

    Through his work, Luc Dondeyne offers us his view of the world. He gives us the opportunity to look together with him by showing us sometimes literally that he looks at the world through a lens. This looking together results in special and unusual compositions, such as portraits without face or with the face turned away, as well as people who are portrayed from the back. The spectator thus becomes part of the triangular relationship Dondeyne deliberately involves himself and ourselves in: the triangle between the artist as viewer, spectator and maker. Those looking at the works are in the middle of this triangle, and consequently they become part of the artist’s gaze and therefore also of the work.



    The intuition, imagination and inner wisdom with which the third eye or the sixth chakra fills us, may also open the gate to the collective memory, on which not only Dondeyne relies but also the spectator who looks at the artist’s works. Frequently, Dondeyne refers in his titles and images consciously or subconsciously to the history of art and culture. He invites us to open our own third eye and to join him to tap into his huge source of knowledge and associations that allows him to connect that which he sees through the third eye with that which he depicts thereof on the canvas or on paper, and with the spectator who contemplates the final result.

    Tim Onderbeke , Labyrinth

    The book Labyrinth exhibits a selection of extraordinary photographs by Tim Onderbeke (°1983) of architecture by Alfons Hoppenbrouwers, Juliaan Lampens, Paul Felix, Paul Meekels, Jul De Roover, Jan Tanghe, Lode Wouters, René Stapels, Victor Bourgeois and objects and sculptures by Roger Bonduel.

    I’m very sensitive to the ‘appearance’ of a building in an environment. As I wandered through the Flemish landscape, I was drawn to the aesthetics of these properties and to the host of ever-changing impressions concerning styles, spatial planning, functions and eras. 



    I’m not an architect. I’m not guided by plans or texts. The architecture allows me to create a new image: the poetry of lines — which is why Le Corbusier’s Poème de l’angle droit is so resonant — , the compositions, the materials that are specific to the building. It enables me to discover architecture as an image, as something layered and complex.



    I look at the architecture through the lens of my camera, the architecture exists for me as an image, not as an object or as a character. It is a search for a mental space that withdraws from the power of architecture.

    Saudade, Laura De Coninck

    Met het boek ‘Saudade’ doet Laura een oproep naar ambassadeurs van het woord. Ze hoopt zo veel mogelijk mensen te ‘besmetten’ met de liefde voor dit woord, zodat het gedeeld en gemeengoed wordt.



    Toen ze het woord hoorde en de betekenis bij herhaling tot haar doordrong, ervaarde ze dit als een soort thuiskomen. Het was alsof plotseling alles op zijn plaats viel; haar oeuvre en dat wat haar dreef om te schilderen had plots een gemeenschappelijke noemer gevonden, een vlag die de lading dekt. En ze ontdekte nog iets anders: wat zij tracht uit te drukken in beelden is net zo onbestemd als wat haar vader probeerde uit te drukken in zijn poëzie.



    Laura vertrok bij het maken van deze bundel met het neerschrijven van emoties. Waarvan de sfeer zich vertaalde in beelden. In een poging om op een zachtere manier over de werkelijkheid te communiceren dan woorden kunnen doen. Woorden schieten vaak tekort, kunnen harder aankomen dan bedoeld en worden vaak verkeerd begrepen. Om haar waarheid uit te drukken grijpt Laura bij voorkeur naar een beeldentaal. Het is een zachte manier van spreken over datgene wat haast onzegbaar is. Een gesprek zonder woorden over Saudade en de kracht en de fragiliteit van de liefde.





    “De emotionele werelden die haar vader kon oproepen op zijn unieke manier, met de juiste woorden, roept Laura op met eenzelfde authenticiteit aan de hand van een ingetogen samenspel van lijnen, beelden, inkt en papier. Ik lees haar graag."
