    Playground '16 - '07

What is the importance of the medium performance today? Which challenges are occurring? And which role has Playground in this context? This set of questions was presented at a selection of artists and curators who visited the festival. Their reflections on ten years Playground led to a new publication, in which curators Steven Vandervelden (STUK) and Eva Wittocx (M-Museum Leuven) also share their vision. As a result the book presents a unique retrospective on the nation-al and international importance of the festival.

3 boek 7 8 9 (box set), Architecten De Vylder Vinck Taillieu

    First 53: €297

    Next 31: €353

    Last 29: €451

3 boek 7 8 9 is a publication by architecten de vylder vinck taillieu in collaboration with MER. Paper Kunsthalle. The box set of three books gives an extended overview of both built and unbuilt work by the office, realised over the past decade.

As a box set, 3 boek 7 8 9 follows the already published 1 boek 1 2 3 and the not yet published 2 boek 4 5 6. In contrast to the first set of books – fully edited by the office itself and conceived as a continuous, associative, cross-referencing text – this third set takes an opposite approach. The box compiles three existing monographs – a re-enactment of the out-of-print 2G N. 66, the 13th catalogue from the series De aedibus international and the recently published a+u 561 17:06 – and brings these ‘as-found objects’ together as one narrative.

The editorial strategy employed in connecting the three separate monographs is an extension of the office’s overall attitude towards architecture, as demonstrated in their work. Using the formal interventions of copying and cutting, the monographs – each with their own household identity – are appropriated and related to each other. As such, the box set not only presents an overview of projects, it embodies these projects in the texture of the publication itself.

3 boek 7 8 9 is available in a limited edition of 113 handnumbered issues and is accompanied by a short essay on architects’ books by Moritz Küng.

    Masatoshi Masanobu

Masatoshi Masanobu was born in 1911 in Suzuki City, the Prefecture of Kochi, Japan. He was a member of the Gutai movement, although his work is not as conspicuous as that of the other Gutai members, nor did he make any historic performances or paintings that stood at the forefront of the era. But in fact he was any less radical than the rest of the group. Masanobu was a rather orthodox Japanese painter, who tried to make a living as an artist while supporting himself as an art teacher. His creative approach appears much more idiosyncratic to younger viewers than the artist could ever have imagined. The proof lies in his early abstract paintings. In his essay in this book the author Kaichi Kawasaki discusses Masanobu’s works and his involvement with Gutai, which grew out of a meeting with Jiro Yoshihara after the war.

Solidarity Poiesis: I Will Come and Steal You, Robin Vanbesien

Taking its vantage point from the popular assemblies in Athens, Solidarity Poiesis: I Will Come and Steal You discusses the multifaceted ideas and prospects of this grassroots movement such as prefiguration, self-governance and abolition democracy. The notion of ‘solidarity poiesis’ arises from an argument for a poetics that will transform social justice through new sustainable self-organized infrastructures.

This book of essays and interviews is a follow-up to Under These Words (Solidarity Athens 2016), a film by Robin Vanbesien (2017).

    Trying, Emilio López-Menchero

This book serves as a printed memory of the oeuvre of the artist Emilio López-Menchero (°1960, Mol). It documents and illustrates a selection of exhibitions, artistic projects and public performances created in the past 25 years.

Conceptually, the book is based on a statement by which López considers each of his actions a test against reality, an ‘attempt’. Within this context, the title of each project is consequently preceded by the prefix ‘Trying to -’; ‘Trying to situate’, ‘Trying to light up’, ‘Trying to question’,... By trying to infiltrate daily context, López-Menchero aims to generate new situations, confront with reality and contemplate on the meaning of art. Included in the book are essays and texts by Luk Lambrecht, Hans Theys and Koen Van Synghel.
